The history of Reiki

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui. The word Reiki combines two Japanese words: "Rei," meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and "Ki," meaning life force energy.

Usui developed Reiki as a gentle practice to support relaxation, balance, and overall well-being. Through the laying on of hands or hands held just above the body, practitioners offer Reiki in a quiet, compassionate way, creating space for the body, mind, and spirit to rest and restore.

Over the past century, Reiki has spread around the world and is practiced in homes, wellness centers, hospices, hospitals, and private practices. While each practitioner brings their own style and presence, the heart of Reiki remains the same: offering a peaceful space for healing, connection, and balance

Our approach: Reiki at Wander Within

Reiki is more than a technique - it's a practice of presence, compassion, and trust.  At Wander Within, each session is intuitive and client-centered. You are always in charge of your experience.

We hold a safe, non-judgemental space where your body, mind, and spirit can relax and realign.

Why I Love Reiki

When I receive Reiki, I can almost feel my energy gently realigning throughout my body. It's incredibly relaxing, and I always leave feeling deeply cared for.

No two sessions are ever the same, but I almost always walk away feeling as though I've been gently rebooted. Whatever challenges I'm carrying seem a little more approachable, my mind feels clearer, and I'm better able to respond rather than react.

Most importantly, Reiki helps me reconnect with myself—mentally, physically, and spiritually. That feeling of coming home to myself is what inspired me to share this practice with others.

Common questions

  • Not at all. Reiki is for everyone, whether this is your first experience or you've received energy work before.

  • Every Reiki experience is unique because every person arrives with different needs. There is no "right" way to experience a session.

  • You may experience:

  • Deep relaxation or a meditative state

  • Warmth, coolness, tingling, or gentle waves of energy

  • Emotional release or a sense of peace

  • Vivid thoughts, memories, or imagery

  • Feeling lighter, more grounded, or deeply rested

  • Simply enjoying  uninterrupted rest

  •

  • You may not experience:

  • Dramatic sensations or anything mystical

  • Immediate answers or life-changing breakthroughs

  • A specific emotion or physical feeling

  • Energy moving in ways you've heard others describe

  • Some people feel a great deal during Reiki. Others simply feel relaxed. Both experiences are equally valid.

  • The intention isn't to create a particular experience—it's to offer your body, mind, and spirit a safe space to rest, rebalance, and receive whatever support is most appropriate for you in that moment.

  • No. Reiki is not a replacement for medical care, mental health treatment, or advice from a licensed healthcare professional.

  • At Wander Within, Reiki is offered as a complementary wellness practice that supports relaxation, stress reduction, and your body's natural ability to restore balance. Many people choose Reiki alongside medical care, therapy, massage, or other wellness practices as part of their overall well-being.

  • If you have concerns about your physical or mental health, please consult your healthcare provider. Reiki practitioners do not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatments, or promise specific outcomes.

  • There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people come once to experience Reiki or find support during a particular season of life, while others choose to make it part of their regular wellness routine.

  • You might consider Reiki:

  • During times of stress, change, or emotional overwhelm

  • When you're feeling disconnected, exhausted, or out of balance

  • As part of your personal self-care or spiritual practice

  • Whenever you feel called to slow down and reconnect with yourself

  • At Wander Within, there is no expectation or pressure to schedule ongoing sessions. Together, we'll explore what feels supportive for you, honoring your needs, your goals, and your own inner guidance.

  • Yes. Reiki can be enjoyed by people of all ages, including children. Sessions for children are always adapted to their age, comfort level, and individual needs.

  • For younger children, sessions are typically shorter and include a parent or guardian in the room. Some children relax quietly, while others prefer to talk, move around, or simply rest in a way that feels natural to them. There is no expectation that a child remain perfectly still.

  • At Wander Within, creating a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment is our priority. Every child's experience is approached with care, respect, and at their own pace.

  • Parents are always welcome to ask questions before scheduling. Together, we'll determine whether Reiki feels like a good fit for your child and what type of session would best support them.

After Your Reiki Session

Continue caring for yourself as the experience unfolds.

After your session, you may feel peaceful, lighter, deeply relaxed, or simply rested. Some people notice immediate shifts, while others experience subtle changes over the next day or two. Every experience is unique.
